Description

Hurricane Point is an exposed protrusion of rock on the Big Sur coast in central California. This scene is looking north toward the city of Monterey and the San Francisco Bay Area, and includes the iconic Bixby Bridge. It is a perfect vantage to view the end of the day and the appearance of the Milky Way as it begins to glow in the starry sky.

In this image I attempted to blend the warm horizon and the cool colors of the “blue hour" of the civil twilight together with the appearance of the Milky Way in the transition to nautical twilight. This image used a 4 second exposure of the landscape and ocean horizon, plus a stack of six 30 second exposures of the upper sky. I was striving to create the sense of the tranquility and peace I felt sitting on Hurricane Point watching the day turn to night. This is the first image in a new collection that I have started entitled, Nocturne.
